The Petter Dalane Quintet was formed in 2022, bringing together some of the musicians I have played the most with since being introduced to the jazz scene in Trondheim around 2016/17.

In April 2024 we released our debut album “Quintet”, to great reviews, Ballade calling it a “ Norwegian modern jazz classic”. In May 2025, we followed up with our second release, Sikksakk (“zig-zag”), both albums featuring cover art by the renowned Norwegian painter Oddvar Torsheim.

Our repertoire primarily consists of my original compositions, with a few exceptions, such as my arrangement of Béla Bartók’s piano piece Bagatelle II. Although our sound  and style clearly draws a lot of influence from the 50’s and 60’s we approach our music in a quite free spirited manner, taking risks and in an anarchic way trying our best to avoid the ever looming risk of musical masquerading.

Petter Dalane - piano
Øyvind Mathisen - trumpet
Erlend Kongtorp - saxophone
Anders Hjemmen - bass
Martin Mellem - drums

Reviews

Vibrant, lively interactions. It's easy to stay in good spirits with this bunch.

  • Concert review by Arild R. Andersen, Jazz i Norge

A brilliant way to honor the tradition while also taking it further in a personal way

  • Album review (Sikksakk) by Tor Hammerø, Nettavisen

"They nail everything – the sound, the feel, the swing, the groove – those are quickly the kind of words that spring to mind in the context of Petter Dalane."

  • Album review (Sikksakk) by Torkjell Hovland, Ballade

The inspiration may be old, but this record still feels fresh and lively.
